The Story of Our Onesies

(Photo: 2011 Cortlan Robertson, and co-founders Shayne Maratea and Spencer Hansen in early versions of BLAMO bunny suits)

It all started with a bunny suit.

When Spencer, the co-founder of BLAMO, was heading off to college, his mom made him a pink bunny suit. At the time, Spencer was an introverted daydreamer who didn’t always feel comfortable in social settings. The bunny suit became a sort of refuge, a place of comfort, and an alternate way of engaging with the world.

He skated across campus in his pink bunny suit. He showed up at parties in it. He slept in it. The suit was more than just clothing.

A few years later, as BLAMO began to take shape, Spencer decided to design a suit of his own. The first was a monkey suit because while the bunny had served him well, Spencer knew in his heart he was more of a monkey: climbing, exploring, constantly moving. Out of love for the original, he also reimagined the bunny suit, an homage to where it all began.

He didn’t just want a throwaway costume. Spencer wanted something that could be lived in. A suit that was durable, functional, and comforting all at once. Non-disposable by design.

That mindset carried forward into BLAMO. Each suit is made on a gauged, hand-operated knitting machine, slow fashion at its core. The accessories are all hand-stitched, ensuring every detail is considered. To push the playfulness further, Spencer added millinery wire to tails and ears, giving them shape and personality.

From the very beginning, quality and intention have been stitched into every piece. The BLAMO onesies aren’t meant for a single moment. They’re designed to move through life with you. Spencer still has his original and well loved Monkey suit and Shayne, co-founder, has her original Bunny suit from over 17 years ago.

The BLAMO onesies aren’t just costumes. They’re a canvas for personality, for play, for expression. What began as one handmade suit from Spencer’s mom has become a collection of designs that continue to grow, just like the people who wear them.
