Our handmade shoes are constructed of natural vegetable tanned leather and we want them to be a staple that lasts. Quality leather is a fairly dynamic material, with use, it develops a lovely shine and smoothness called patina creating a signature look specific to wear and use. Proper care for leather shoes ensures their durability and maintains their appearance.

Follow these simple guidelines to keep your leather footwear in top condition.

Leather Care Basics

  • Use the Right Treatment – We recommend Obenauf’s for its natural oils. Avoid mink oil (too acidic) and cheap petroleum products.
  • Spot Test First Always test in a small, hidden area before full application.
  • Apply Lightly Rub a small amount in circles, just enough to keep the leather moist & supple, never oversaturate.
  • Rehydrate with Care  If your leather is cracked or stiff, take your time. Warm hands, gentle massages, and minimal oil go a long way.
  • Routine Maintenance If used daily, apply a protectant every 1–2 years to maintain flexibility and hydration.
  • Avoid Extreme Heat – Keep away from direct heat sources, no dryers, no blow dryers, no hot cars. Heat weakens glue bonds.
  • Don’t Over-Oil – Leather comes pre-treated. Too much oil weakens structure and seeps through. Apply only when needed.
We treat all our shoes with Obenauf’s Heavy Duty LP, an industrial strength leather preservative and conditioner made with a beeswax/propolis formula. Heavy Duty LP restores lost oils, provides protection from moisture and dirt while still allowing leather to breathe. It's contains no harmful petroleum, solvents, paraffin, or mink oil.
